Daily obedience, daily discipline. There is no other substitute really. Surely there are death bed confessions, but to really develop power in this life and the life to come, you need daily devotion. This is one of several talks I have recently read that focus on the need for daily, simple, focused devotion and discipline. I think partly these are catching my eye because it is really what I need, I am in dire need of daily disciplines!

“Never has there been a time when the written and spoken word can descend upon us from so many different sources. Through the media we find analysts analyzing the analysts, almost overwhelming us with opinions and different views. What a comfort it is to know that the Lord keeps a channel of communication open to His children through the prophet. What a blessing it is to know we have a voice we can trust to declare the will of the Lord.”

What an apt description of our time; and of course since this conference, it has only gotten worse. I have heard it said many times, that one of the biggest challenges people and organisations face in our age, is one of attention and focus amidst a glut of information and new things. (And of course, we also live in a time of 24 hour news streams. And if there is no real news, well then new outlets have to manufactuer something to keep viewers. Hence, “analysts analyzing analysts”!!)

Elder Perry here gives us direction on how to handle this onslaught; focus on (and I think also measure everything by) the only channel that really matters, personal revelation.

“Could the Lord possibly have been concerned about smoothing my way in such a small but, to me, important matter? I have learned since, through many such experiences, that the Lord will help us in every aspect of our lives when we are trying to serve Him and do His will.”

A nice quote that is very meaningful. I suppose at the heart of the quote lies the question of why? Why would the Lord be interested or concerned about us? What are we to Him? After all, if we are His children, why would He not be interested in our lives to this degree? I think it is the feeling that God is not involved in our lives that is the worst thing about living today. We are so distracted by everything going on, that we fail to recognize these simple blessings, these simple touches.

The first quote I pulled from this talk is more just for me than anything. Since we live outside the US, Scouting is not an option for him, so achieving the Duty to God award takes it place.

The second is more an expression of my own personal philosophy. I have learned that early decisions either limit or expand our opportunity. And the sooner we become able to think about our choices in a good, rational, righteous way, the better off we will be.

The first time this fact really hit home for me was about a month after I had gotten home from my mission. It was late and I was watching some old black and white film set in England. A court scene started, and there was a judge sitting in a lofty chair. I was startled to see that the judge’s outfit, the costume they put the actor in, was an almost exact copy of the temple clothing worn during the endowment session, excepting his robe which was black.

I wondered how this could be. I thought that part of the reason behind copying was that when people saw ancient Israel, saw what they did as they came into Canaan, saw how the Lord blessed them, that they copied the outward symbols in an attempt to borrow some of that power and authority.

But again, it is nice to have an Apostle say it too.
